John Mayall Additional Obituary News – Died 22 07 2024
The late John Mayall is probably more famous for the people who played in his band rather than for the music he recorded. He had very little commercial success (no hit singles) although he was very influential and was awarded an OBE in 2005.
The Bluesbreakers
His backing band, The Bluesbreakers went through 15 different line ups and at one time or another included such future greats as Eric Clapton, Peter Green (later of Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (of The Rolling Stones).
Mayall’s Influence
It was Mayall who suggested to Mick Jagger that they should hire Taylor to replace the late Brian Jones, which the Rolling Stones then did. Bassists Jack Bruce (of Cream) and briefly Andy Fraser (of Free) as well as John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood (the rhythm section of Fleetwood Mac) all came up through Mayall’s bands.
